Prantl invites Marina Fedorova to reimagine Munich in cards and leather products

A collection of greeting cards and hand-painted leather goods turns Munich’s landmarks, rituals and seasons into small works.

Founded in Munich in 1797 and once a purveyor to the Royal Bavarian Court, Prantl carries its savoir-faire into a new dialogue with the artist Marina Fedorova. Her watercolours and drawings bring the House’s Bavarian heritage together with her distinctive visual language, in a collection of greeting cards and leather goods.

Born in Leningrad, Fedorova divides her time between St. Petersburg and Munich. Travel is the basis of her practice: she studies cities across Europe and Asia, looking for contrasts, architecture and the meanings embedded in a country’s culture. Trained in graphic art and fashion illustration at the Stieglitz Academy, she does not simply document what she sees. She translates an impression into an image.

For Prantl, she began with the city itself. She walked its landmarks, studied its cultural codes and followed its traditional holidays, then chose the details worth painting. She sketched on site and painted the watercolours later, from memory. From card to card, the result moves between sharp line and soft colour.

At the heart of the collection is Oktoberfest, a motif the House has long held dear and a reflection of its bond with Munich and Bavarian culture. Around it, the series begins with the city’s landmarks. The Frauenkirche glows in the golden hour. In Heart in Munich, a red, heart-shaped balloon drifts beside the Neo-Gothic tower of the New Town Hall. In At the Opera, a couple emerges from the theatre. The year then unfolds through Easter and Valentine’s Day before turning to a winter series set in the Alps.

Fedorova also paints the leather goods by hand, and each piece is unique. Guests of the House are invited to choose the motif that speaks to them, from a Bavarian scene to a bolder graphic composition from the artist’s own universe.
