Introducing Sulla Project: A Bold Step in Arts and Crafts

Many highly skilled artisans contribute to some of the world’s most prestigious luxury houses; yet, their names often remain unknown. The Sulla Project was created to address this challenge by providing a platform that supports exceptional artisans, fosters collaboration, and increases their visibility.
A key example of this initiative is the creation of “À la lueur des vagues” (“By the Light of the Waves”), a folding screen that brings together distinct craftsmanship disciplines. This project demonstrates how the convergence of traditional skills and modern innovation can result in a unique, high-calibre work that highlights the artisans involved.
The Inspiration Behind the Name “Sulla”
The project’s name, Sulla, draws inspiration from Cornelius Sulla, a Roman general who gained prominence with the support of artists and artisans. Once he attained power, he reciprocated by becoming a patron of the arts. This story serves as a powerful metaphor for the project’s mission to uplift underappreciated artisans. According to Marina Fedorova, Creative Director of Sputnik Partners, the name embodies resilience, reciprocity, and the patronage of the arts—core values that guide the project.
Selecting the Artisans: A Thoughtful and Rigorous Process
The Sulla Project is not only focused on artistic creation but also on supporting artisans by addressing the practical challenges they face. The curator of the project—Élise Blouet-Ménard—plays a crucial role in guiding the project, identifying artisans’ specific needs, and fostering an environment in which their work can gain wider recognition.
“It’s clear that sometimes the best artisans have trouble making themselves known. Either because they lack the means or the time, or because, despite working for the most prestigious French luxury houses, they are not allowed to talk about their creations. By proposing a partnership between several specialists, we are pushing the craftsmen to go further in their know-how and to surpass themselves.”

Collaboration Across Disciplines
Several unique techniques were considered among the proposals, including “Japanese burnt wood.” Candidates also submitted material samples, prototype designs, and colour studies, contributing to a selection process that prioritised both conceptual depth and technical feasibility. A defining feature of the Sulla Project is its emphasis on collaboration across different disciplines. This approach enables artisans to combine their expertise while collectively addressing technical challenges. By bringing together specialists from diverse backgrounds, the project fosters an environment where creativity and innovation can thrive.
“The choice fell on the one that was the most accomplished, the one that seemed to us to be the most advanced in solving technical challenges and bringing innovation.”
Élise Blouet-Ménard
The project brought together three artisans specializing in distinct crafts:
- Fanny Boucher: An expert in héliogravure (intaglio printing), adapted for textiles and interiors.
- Morgane Baroghel-Crucq: A weaver integrating silk and metal threads into contemporary textile designs.
- Pino Amato: A woodworking master known for intricate structural compositions and refined joinery.
Their combined efforts resulted in a cohesive work that highlights their unique skills while pushing creative boundaries.
Showcasing “À la lueur des vagues”
À la lueur des vagues will debut at the Journées Européennes des Métiers d’Art (JEMA) in Mortagne-au-Perche in April 2025. This event celebrates exceptional craftsmanship by showcasing 25 distinguished artisans to an audience of industry professionals and connoisseurs. Afterward, the screen will be available to the participating artisans for further exhibitions.
The Future of the Sulla Project
The Sulla Project is planned as a continuous initiative, with its direction depending on feedback from the participating artisans. If successful, the project intends to broaden its scope, supporting more artisans and fostering additional collaborations.
“We are waiting for the first feedback from the artisans. If positive, we would be very happy to continue this project to help more talented craftsmen.”
Élise Blouet-Ménard
The Sulla Project serves as a platform for artisans to gain recognition, collaborate across disciplines, and expand the boundaries of their craft. One of its initiatives, “À la lueur des vagues,” emphasises the importance of preserving traditional techniques while also embracing innovation.
