Dune Box — an exceptional piece of craftsmanship
Ateliers SP displayed the “Dune Box” during the Ethereal Echoes duo exhibition in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The “Dune Box” represents the synthesis of artistic vision and meticulous craftsmanship, designed by the internationally acclaimed artist Marina Fedorova and admirably crafted by master artisan Frédéric Hamel.
The concept of a “Dune Box” is inspired by the captivating landscapes of sand deserts and dunes of the Arabian Peninsula. Frédéric Hamel, in collaboration with artist Marina Fedorova, translated these impressions into a functional work of art. With its upper part echoing the graceful curves of dunes, the object pays tribute to a unique geographical phenomenon that served as its muse.
Inspired by Frank Herbert’s 1965 science fiction “Dune,” Hamel and Fedorova designed the box, transforming an everyday item like a tissue box into an exquisite piece of art. Meticulous attention to detail, visual aesthetics, and careful material selection are evident at every stage of the design and development process.
Crafted in Ateliers SP’s workshop in Normandy, the “Dune Box” is a culmination of over 40 hours of dedicated craftsmanship by Frédéric Hamel, the in-house Master of Art. The box features a harmonious blend of wood species, including creamy white Ash from Europe, precious brown Ziricote from Mexico and red Atlantic Jarrah from South Africa/Australia. Crafted using traditional cabinet-making techniques, the wooden structure is meticulously assembled and adorned with layers of veneer. The intricate marquetry captures the essence of the design, and the silver logo undergoes a careful process, ensuring a flawless finish with a thin layer of wax.
