Ateliers SP Honored with the Craftsmanship Award at Formae Fair
The recent Formae fair marked a significant achievement for Ateliers SP, confirming the studio’s growing recognition within the professional design community. Exclusively reserved for industry experts, the event offered a valuable platform to engage with architects, specifiers, and interior designers seeking refined craftsmanship and innovative material expertise.
Ateliers SP received the Craftsmanship Award, a distinction that acknowledges both technical mastery and the creative reinterpretation of traditional know-how in contemporary design. The jury highlighted the studio’s ability to rejuvenate ancestral craft processes by integrating them into modern forms and functions.
Designer Marianne Barrier draws her inspiration from the intersection of contemporary aesthetics and heritage craftsmanship. Her research focuses on reimagining straw marquetry through fluid, organic shapes. A notable example of this approach is the screen created by Ateliers SP, inspired by the iconic Baumann model. Composed of approximately one hundred marqueted wooden slats joined by a flexible geotextile, the piece forms a seamless wave-like movement. The natural brilliance of rye straw produces an ever-changing play of light, enhancing its sculptural presence.
This creation encapsulates Barrier’s artistic philosophy: transforming a timeless material into a distinctly modern expression. It exemplifies the dialogue between flexibility and structure, tradition and innovation—values that lie at the heart of Ateliers SP’s commitment to excellence in contemporary craftsmanship.
